The cow should be declared as the national animal of India, said the Allahabad High Court. A bench of Justice Sekhar Kumar Yadav on Wednesday further said that ‘Gau Raksha’ (Cow Protection) should be made a fundamental right of the Hindus.
The court made this statement during the hearing of a bail plea of one Javed from samba who has been booked on charges of allegedly stealing a cow and slaughtering it. The court denied his bail.
The court observed cows as a symbol of Hindu faith and culture and said that the cow was the basis of Indian culture and had occupied an important place in the Puranas, the Shastras, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. It also pointed to the economic value of cows as the backbone of farming and other uses in daily life.
The court, therefore, viewed that the law against cow slaughter should be brought in the parliament.
