Over 100 monks in Sikkim have tested Covid positive on Sunday. According to govt officials, till Sunday in two monasteries a total number of 158 monks have been tested positive. The positivity rate among the monks is 62.02 percent.
Robin Sewa, Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Gangtok said, “The monastery has been declared as containment zone that would restrict any movement. The other monks of the monastery and those who have come in contact with them are also being traced and tested.”
Thirty-seven Buddhist monks from the Dharma Chakra Centre in Rumtek Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site 30 kilometers from Gangtok, tested positive.
Meanwhile, in the last 24 hours, Sikkim reported nearly three COVID-19 deaths, taking the overall death count to 224. Sikkim now has an active caseload of 3,317, with 9,381 people recovered so far.
Amidst the Covid surge in state, the state Government of Sikkim has already extended lockdown for another week.
