In an order, the Gauhati High Court has directed the Cachar district authority in Assam to provide rations to covid-hit sex workers.
A bench comprises of Chief Justice Sudhanhshu Dhulia and Justice M.R. Pathak of the high court issued the order as an interim mandamus from today itself.
Hearing a plea, filed by one Debajit Gupta of Srikona in Silchar the court ordered so. And the DC also has stated that the authority already identified the sex workers and their families.
.“Since it is an urgent situation, let the rations be provided to them May 28 itself,” the court said.
As per reports, in the redlight area of Silchar, there are around 70 sex workers who earn for their families of about 300 people.
The bench also mentioned that, Supreme Court of India on 29 September, 2020 passed in Criminal Appeal no 135 of 2010, observing that sex workers have a right to live with dignity as they are human beings. It also constituted a committee to look into the situation of sex workers of the country.
