Today, Sivsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has been granted bail against the case registered at Chabua police station by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Briefing before media, Advocate Krishna Gogoi who appears for Akhil Gogoi said that the special NIA court has discharged Akhil Gogoi, Bhupen Gogoi, and Jagajit Gohain in the NIA cases.
“Two cases were registered against Akhil Gogoi. One in Chabua PS and another in Chanmari PS. Meanwhile, the Chabua PS case charge hearing is over and they have released an order regarding the same. NIA court has discharged Akhil Gogoi, Jagajit Gohain, Bhupen Gogoi and the charges have been framed against Bhaskarjyoti Phukan. Phukan has been framed under IPC sections 144 and 188 and further court proceedings will continue in the Dibrugarh Court. Also, both the 144 and 188 sections are bailable,” said Akhil Gogoi’s advocate, Krishna Gogoi
He added, “Now hearing of the case registered at Chandmari Police Station is underway.”
The Chabua Police Department filed a complaint against Gogoi in 2019 for allegedly assaulting an on-duty police officer during a CAA demonstration. The cops accused him of hurling stones at the official and shattering his teeth. The matter was later investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Recently, on May 2 this year, Akhil Gogoi made history by being the first person from Assam to win an assembly election while being imprisoned. He took oath as MLA from the Sivsagar constituency on May 21.
But Akhil Gogoi is not yet granted bail as his case at Chandmari police station is underway.
