After 25 years, an Olympian from Mizoram earns the ticket to Tokyo Olympics.
Hockey star Lalremsiami becomes the 1st woman from the state to take part in Olympic as she is set to make her debut. She got selected in the 16 member women hockey squad of India.
Besides Lalremsiami, the team includes seven other debutants- Gurjit Kaur (defender), Udita (defender), Nisha (mid-fielder), Navneet Kaur (forward), Sharmila Devi (forward), and Salima Tete (mid-fielder).
Mizoram State Sports Minister Robert Romawia Royte praised the Olympian and conveyed best wishes to her. Mizoram shall be looking forward to her winning an Olympic medal for the country, the Minister said while wishing the player good luck.
Moreover, this will be the Indian women’s hockey team’s third appearance at the Olympic Games and their second consecutive outing, with previous appearances coming in 1980 and 2016.
In the 2016 Rio Games, the Indian women’s squad made history when it qualified for the Olympics after 36 long years. Currently, the team is preparing for the Games at the ongoing national camp at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Centre.
