Meghalaya: Justice (retd) T Vaiphei will head the judicial inquiry into the Killing of Cheristerfield Thangkhiew
Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) chairperson, T Vaiphei, a retired justice will head the judicial inquiry into the killing of former HNLC elder chesterfield Thangkhiew, told Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday.
Sangma told that the inquiry committee will look into the aspect of human rights. The committee will be given complete freedom and full powers to look into all aspects of the incident, he added.
Speaking to the demand for the suspension of two senior police officials who are allegedly responsible for the incident, he told that actions will be taken only after receiving the report of the inquiry.
It needs to mention that former Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) general secretary, Cheristerfield Thangkhiew was killed in an encounter while a joint team of East Jaintia Hills Police and East Khasi Hills police conducted a raid in his house on August 13 suspecting Thangkhiew’s involvement in recent IED blast in the state. But the police killing was claimed to be a fake encounter by family members, various organizations, and pressure groups.
