Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Govindas Konthoujam has resigned from his post. As ANI report claims he is likely to join Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) along with eight Congress MLAs.
Ahead of the Manipur Assembly poll, which will go early next year, Konthoujam’s resignation became a matter of concern for the Congress Party.
Konthoujam, who had been appointed as Manipur Congress chief in December 2020 by party high command was a six-time consecutively elected Congress MLA from the Bishnupur constituency.
In the 2017 Assembly election, Congress won 28 seats out of 60 total seats while BJP won 21 seats. The NPP and NPF won 4 seats each. Though Congress became the single largest party it couldn’t cross the halfway mark of 31. As a result, BJP formed the government with support from other parties. Presently, the Manipur Assembly has an effective strength of 56 members where BJP and Congress have 25 and 17 members respectively.
As the election is ahead, the BJP wants to retain power with an absolute majority.
