Journalist Kishorchandra Wangkhem and Political activist Erendro Leichombam from Manipur were arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) , after they had been granted bail for an earlier arrest as they were charged for their allegedly derisory Facebook post on state BJP chief S Tikendra Singh.
The Facebook post was in reference to pictures and videos by Reuters that showed a group of right-wing activists take cow dung and cow urine as covid treatment and that’s why the state BJP chief has died last week.
In his Facebook post, Wangkhem wrote: “Santhi Sanyung na yadrabo, oh!!! RIP #Rashikang_Kangyet Hayeng nga chaani (rough translation: Cow dung cow urine didn’t work. Groundless argument. Tomorrow I will have fish).”
Meanwhile, another post was uploaded on Facebook by Leichombam and the post read: “The cure for Corona is Not cow dung & Cow Urine. The cure is science and common Sense. Professor ji RIP”.
Wangkhem, 41 have been arrested for the second time under the same law. Associated with ‘Frontline Manipur”, he has been a critic of the BJP-led government and after criticizing Manipur CM N Biren Singh in 2018, he faced this contentious law.
The state BJP vice president Usham Debran Singh and General Secretary P Premananda Meetai filed FIR against these two. Then they were granted bail on Monday. But later on, the saffron party-led government invoked the NSA and re-arrested them.
Erendro is the convenor of the political organization People’s Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA).
