The Fisheries Department of Manipur has started an initiative for the revival of local catfish production in Imphal. There are reports of disappearing local fish species, including Sareng.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh considering the development accompanied by Fisheries minister S Rajen Singh and other officials released around 2,000 fingerlings imported from outside in ponds identified by the Fisheries department.
Biren Singh wrote in a recent Facebook post, “During the National Fish Farmer’s Day observation on July 10, 2021, the State Government announced incentives including loans with 50% grant to fish farmers producing local Sareng. Since then, over 10,000 Manipuri Sareng have been distributed to progressive fish farmers.”
