“If Ravi and Dhoni disagree on tactics and team selection, it might have an impact on the team. I’m just hoping there won’t be any clashes. However, if Ravi and Dhoni can get on the same page, it will be extremely beneficial to India “Gavaskar told Aaj Tak.
Gavaskar, states his experience as a consultant of the Indian team. He told that when he was made a consultant (Mentor) of the team in 2004, the then head coach John Wright got nervous, he probably thought Gavaskar was going to take his place.
He further said that the situation is different now. “But it is different here, in this case, Ravi knows that Dhoni has no interest in coaching,’’ he said.
“So, if Dhoni wants to be a coach, he should wait two or three years before doing so.”
Gavaskar welcomed the BCCI’s decision to select Dhoni as Team India’s mentor and said that it is a “huge boost” to team India. “India would benefit greatly from Dhoni’s selection as a mentor. India won the 2011 World Cup and the 2007 T20 World Cup under his supervision. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience. When Dhoni was playing, no one was more devastating than he was, ” he added.
