The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has introduced separate toilets for transgender passengers at its stations. The DMRC has taken the decision with an aim to prevent gender discrimination and any kind of assault against the transgender community.
As per the provision, transgender passengers can now access separate toilets at metro stations which were earlier meant for disabled passengers.
The DMRC said, “ In its effort to provide safe and prevent gender discriminations against transgenders, Delhi Metro on priority basis has designated its existing toilets meant only for Divyagjans (disabled persons) so far, to be accessible for the transgenders too.”
At present Delhi Metro has 347 such separate toilets at its stations spread across the network and DMRC is also in the process of contemplating ways to identify dedicated locations to provide separate public toilet facilities at its upcoming stations in phase four, the DMRC further stated.
Bilingual (English and Hindi) indications along with symbols of transgender persons and persons with disabilities have been installed to guide passengers to these separate toilets.
Meanwhile, transgender passengers who wish to use gender-based toilets as per self-identified gender are free to do so.
