In a unique initiative, the Maharashtra government has announced to hold a “Corona-free village competition” to implement the proper protocol, which will eventually flatten the curve of Covid cases.
The state’s Rural Development Minister Hasan Mushrif announced that three village panchayats will be awarded for good COVID management to curb COVID cases. The rewards range from Rs 15 lakhs to Rs 50 lakhs, as announced by Mushrif.

“By such initiatives, there will be more awareness about Covid-19 and we will be able to stop it in villages. Everybody from the village must cooperate, and the gram sabha and sarpanch (village head) must take this initiative seriously,” Mushrif said.
The first prize will yield Rs 50 lakh while the second and third prizes will yield Rs 25 lakh and Rs 15 lakh respectively.
The participating villages will be judged on the basis of 22 criteria by a committee set up for this purpose.The “Covid-free village” contest requires the villages to meet 22 standards. The villages will compete for 50 marks, based on the assessment of the work done between June 1, 2021 and March 31, 2022.
As per the public health department of Maharashtra, the state recorded 15,169 new cases, 285 deaths and 29,270 recoveries over a period of 24 hours on Thursday. Meanwhile, the recovery rate in the state stands at 94.54 percent.
