” The California Independent System Operator (CAISO) region aims to enhance solar and wind power capacity in 2021 to help the state to fulfill its goal of 50 percent renewable energy by 2025 ” -the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said on Tuesday.
The CAISO aims to add 1.6 gigawatts (GW) of utility-scale solar power and 0.4 GW of onshore wind turbine capacity this year. CAISO also plans to add 2.5 GW of battery storage capacity this year. These batteries could be charged by renewable energy that would otherwise have been curtailed.
Two projects are being developed to assist hydrogen manufacturing and hydrogen-based energy storage, which could assist reduce solar curtailment.
