Assam Flood: Over 3.63 lakh people across 22 districts affected

The flood situation in Assam is unchanged and deteriorating with over 3.65 lakh people affected across 22 districts of the state as the Brahmaputra is flowing in above normal to severe flood situations in several districts along with its tributaries such as Beki, Jia Bharali, Dhanshiri, Puthimari, Dikhow, Subanshiri, Kushiyara etc.

According to official sources, two people lost their lives on Monday. One child at Chenga in Barpeta district drowned in the floodwater on Monday while another child drowned at Mayong in Marigaon district.

The flood hits the districts of Barpeta, Biswanath, Cachar, Chirang, Dhemaji, Dhuburi, Darrang, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, West Karbi Anglong, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivsagar, Sonitpur, South Salmara, Tinsukia, Karimganj and parts of Kamrup Metropolitan.

Till Monday over 950 villages are underwater and 30,333.36 hectares of paddy fields are damaged across the state. More than 2.5 lakh domestic animals and poultry are also affected.

Kaziranga National Park and Dibru Choikhowa National park are also affected by floods. About 70 percent area of Kaziranga National Park is underwater while Dibru Choikhowa National Park has also been flooded. Wild animals have moved to safer areas and highlands. In Dibru Choikhowa, at least three feral horses have died due to the flood.

In 10 flood-affected districts, 44 relief camps and distribution centres have been set up where over 1600 people are taking shelter.

Lakhimpur is the worst-hit district with more than 1.3 lakh people suffering.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday Tuesday reviewed the flood situation in Assam in a call with Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. He assured all possible support from the centre to help mitigate the situation.

“I pray for the safety and well-being of those living in the affected areas,” the Prime Minister said in a tweet.
