Majuli tragic boat accident: one died, two persons reportedly missing

One college lecturer died and two persons are still missing in the tragic boat accident near Nimatighat, Jorhat. Rescue operations by NDRF and SDRF are going in the Brahmaputra near Nimatighat, Jorhat.  According to the administration, Parimita Das (30) who was working as a lecturer at Majuli’s Rangasahi college has lost her life while Dr. Bikramjit Baruah, a doctor at Majuli and Indrajit Borah from Lakhimpur district are missing.  But local people and eyewitnesses claim that more people reportedly missing.

The tragic boat accident took place on Wednesday evening while tow boats collided near Nimatighat. One boat MK Tipkai was coming from Majuli while the other named Maa Kamala was leaving from Nimatighat, Jorhat. The boat named Man Kamala was overturned in water after the collision. As per unofficial sources, the boat was loaded with more than a hundred passengers, around forty motorcycles and other belongings.

The boat is found in one and a half km distance and rescue teams have rescued the boat, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma told media. “Rescue operation going on in Majuli. As of now, 1 death and 2 missing. Efforts are on to find out more information,” the CM said in a tweet.

“82 persons have survived the tragedy, 7 persons have been reported missing and one person has lost her life (Parimita Das, Age-30). 8 persons are currently being treated at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital. A hotel has been arranged for the rescued persons requiring accommodation. The capsized boat has been cut open by NDRF and SDRF teams and no dead bodies have been found,” a preliminary report said.

Assam CM Dr. Sarma has visited the place this morning and inspecting the developments. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal have called the Assam CM and promised all possible support.
