Four Indian boxers got byes into the Olympic Games pre-quarterfinals, the Indian Olympic Association informed on Thursday.
Among four boxers into the Olympic Games who got byes was world no. 1 Amit Panghal (52Kg) on Thursday. He will jump into the boxing ring on 31 July in the last 16 stages against the winner of the contest between Botswana’s Mahommed Rajab Otukile and Colombia’s Herney Rivas Martinez.
In the women’s group, six-time world champion M C Mary Kom (51Kg) will jump against Dominica’s Miguelina Hernandez on 25 July. Next would be Colombian champion Lorena Victoria Valencia as she carries a second Olympic medal.
Also getting a bye was former Asian Games bronze medalist Satish Kumar, who has 91+ Kg, the first super heavyweight from India. He is going to face Jamaica’s Ricardo Brown in the pre-quarters. Another debutant Ashish Choudhury (75Kg) will be against China’s Erbieke Touheta.
Commonwealth silver medalist Manish Kaushik (63Kg) also going to make his debut with Britain’s European silver medalist Luke McCormack. Another Indian player Vikas Krishnan (69 Kg) will take on Japan’s Menash Okazawa.
From the women boxer’s draw, Pooja Rani (75 Kg) will take on Algeria’s Ichrak Chaib in her opening and will be take up against China’s Li Qian if she wins. Assam’s Lovlina Borgohain (69 Kg) got a bye and going to take on Germany’s Nadine Apetz in her opening debut. Simranjit Kaur (60 Kg) also got a walkover and going to jump on Thailand’s Sudaporn Seesondee in her pre-quarters. These three women boxers are going to make their Olympic debut this year.
