Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s cabinet gave approval to the Meghalaya Youth Policy, 2021 yesterday.
The main goals of that policy are creating the right ways for the youths in achieving their potential and power, skills, creativity, and responsibility towards the local and global community. The policy will be available by the government as soon as possible.
After the cabinet meeting, Conrad K. Sangma addressed the reporters about the policy, ” It was absolutely necessary that the government comes out with the clear policy on how to enhance the energy of the youth so that they can work constructively for their own future, their family and for the state and the country as a whole.”
This policy aims to address major issues of the youth, related to nine main areas. Those are- education, health and well-being, counseling and mentoring, employment, skill development and entrepreneurship, sports, cultural and creative industries, engagement and leadership, inclusion, and environmental consciousness.
The policy includes some other useful plans, like Early Childhood Education Mission, Meghalaya School Improvement Plan, FIT India campaign programs, etc.
From the latest estimates, Meghalaya has a population of around 38.29 lakh, of which over 28.48 lakh or 74% are under the age of 35. While the policy’s primary focus is youths aged 15-29 years. Other critical issues and programs also connecting to the age group of 5 to 14 years will be emphasized and made part of the overall policy.
Sangma also informed, “We have been working on this policy for a very long time. We had worked on the note given by the IIM. We had spent almost close to ten months to add many more aspects by studying the policies of different states of the country and even some countries across the globe.”
