Manipuri Activist Erendro Leichombam, booked under the National Security Act for his social media posts criticising the claims that cow dung and cow urine are effective in preventing or treating Covid-19 has been released on Monday after the Supreme Court’s release order.
Erendro Leichombam, a 40-year-old activist was arrested on May 17, along with journalist and activist Kishorchandra Wangkhem under the NSA for their posts on social media on the death of the state BJP chief S Tikendra Singh (retired professor), due to Covid related complications. Erendro from his Facebook profile posted, “The cure for Corona is not cow dung & cow urine. The cure is science & common sense. Professor ji RIP.”
On Monday based on Erendro’s petition, the apex court ordered that Erendro be released on or before 5 pm, Monday evening. The court said, “In the meantime, having prima facie considered the contents of the petition, we are of the view that the continued detention of the petitioner before this Court would amount to a violation of the right to life and personal liberty under Article 21 of the Constitution.”
On being released Erendro on Monday told the media, “This is not the first time they (the government) have slapped all sorts of charges on me including sedition, NSA. But that is not going to stop me from expressing my opinion. It is within my right as a citizen to critique the government. This is a democracy.”
It needs to mention that the activist was booked and in Police custody for criticising the Government. Not only Erendro Leichomobam but allegations of arresting several people on false cases including the sedition charge in Manipur for criticising the Biren Singh-led government are going on for a long.
